Bluetooth Range

Among different bluetooth specifications, there are 2 classes (types) of devices:

  • Class 1: range up to 330 feet (100 meters)
  • Class 2: range up to 100 feet (30 meters)

Additional facts:

  • the range depends not only on the transmitter, but also on the mobile phone which is receiving files;
  • the range depends on atmospheric, geographic, urban conditions (vendors provide the best achievable range in perfect conditions)
  • the farther the distance, the slower transmission speed;
  • Class 1 devices might be boosted to work on a better range (like 600 feet), however you should not believe it is possible to broadcast files (in a bluetooth marketing sense) to mobile phones over 3000 feet range, as some bluetooth vendors suggest

Bluetooth Range Questions

What is the real range of bluetooth?

Up to 330ft/100m (by design) in the open air. The range depends on both devices between which the connection is established. In closed spaces the effective range may be 100 feet or less, depending on the type of interior design.

Is it possible to boost bluetooth range?

Technically this is possible. You can achieve 1km (or more) range, but this is only possible between two transmitters/receivers. In many countries Bluetooth devices with output power stronger than 20dB (100m) are prohibited.

Is it true that transmission speed depends on the distance between devices?

Yes. The closer you are to the bluetooth transmitter, the faster you will receive files.
